New ArabGu Chapter
Earth System Physics (ESP)
The Earth System Physics (ESP) Chapter focuses on a wide spectrum of the Earth system from the atmosphere to the Earth’s deep interior. It concerns multidisciplinary research ranging from solid Earth processes to climate dynamics. Accordingly, it involves a wide range of relevant topics to understand the origin, dynamics, and structure of the Earth from the surface to the core, the seismic structure of the lithosphere and how it deforms, the geodynamical processes, etc. Its members use different disciplines including seismology, gravity, geomagnetism/paleomagnetism, geodesy, tectonophysics, tsunami physics, Geodynamic models, geothermal science, physical oceanography, meteorology, and climatology. Most of these disciplines that draw upon the fundamentals of physics and geology provide valuable information for quantifying and mitigating natural hazards, addressing climate change, and securing natural resources. As such, ESP is very interdisciplinary and contributes to ensure a sustainable development.

Following the successful 1st international ArabGU conference, AIC-1 (Algeria, Feb. 2016), we thank all participants and delegates. We were delighted to welcome you in this sound event. During the AIC 1 course, new ArabGU-affiliated chapters have been proposed. The most important one is the "Planetary and Astrobiology" chapter.

We are happy to nominate the following key scholars as founding members of this chapter:

This chapter is dedicated to provide a framework for meetings and joint projects between researchers from different Arab countries, and the rest of the world. This ArabGU section will be the right tool for the organization of workshops, sessions, and training courses for Arab youth geoscientists.

We believe that the AICAC Conference (ARAB IMPACT CRATERING AND ASTROGEOLOGY CONFERENCE) to be held in Algeria in November 2016,  will be an opportunity to better structure the "Planetary and Astrobiology" section of ArabGU. The organizing committee of the AICAC and the board of the ArabGU, headed by Prof. Hamimi, and Prof. Bendaoud (vice-president) will be happy to bring all necessary assistance for this. By then, we hope that the founding members will do their best for the success of this section.

Suggestions by ArabGU members and whoever interested are to sent to A. Bendaoud ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )

The 1st ArabGU International Conference

ArabGU general assembly

Dear colleagues,

The 1st ArabGU International Conference (AIC-1) and general assembly will be held at the University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene, Algeria in February, 2016.

The AIC-1 is the paramount venue for geoscientists from around the world to come together and share ideas and experiences. A comprehensive program is planned with multiple keynote speakers, parallel technical sessions, poster sessions, and exhibitors. As an added promote to participants, the AIC-1 venue organized a post- conference excursion that allows access to the unique continental Hoggar Shield, and very attractive landscapes.

The ArabGU Founding Team and the AIC-1 Organizing Committee would like to invite you to participate and submit your communications. Abstracts in all aspects of Earth sciences (Solid Earth, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Geoparks ... etc) in Africa, Arab World and neighboring areas are welcome.

Your presence and contribution will make it a memorable event. We look forward to welcoming you in the AIC-1.

The Arabian Geosciences Union (ArabGU) launches a section on “Planetary Sciences and Astrobiology”

The Arabian Geosciences Union (ArabGU) is happy to inform about the establishment of a scientific section on “Planetary Sciences and Astrobiology”.

This section will be officially presented during the First ArabGU International Conference, AIC-1 (Algeria, February 17-18, 2016). The creation of this section was proposed by Prof. Jesús Martínez-Frías (Senior Scientist of the Institute of Geosciences (CSIC-UCM), Director of REDESPA, Science Team Member of NASA and ESA missions and Senior Advisory Board Member of ArabGU) to the ArabGU President (Prof. Zakaria Hamimi, Benha University, Egypt) and ArabGU board. Prof. Hamimi is co-chairing the AIC-1 together with Prof.  A. Quabadi.

The proposal was also submitted to the AIC-1 organizing committee and it was accepted. A specific Theme on this subject is already incorporated in the AIC-1 programme (Theme 14:Planetary Science and Astrobiology), which will be coordinated by Profs. El-Goresi, Martínez-Frías and other experts on these subjects.

ArabGU considers that this new section will open new ways for further cooperation, and it is a significant step forward for the involvement of the Arab community of geoscientists in the framework of Planetary Sciences and Astrobiology.

The African Geoparks Network “AGN” was initiated by the African Association of Women in Geosciences “AAWG” during its pre-conference meeting held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in May 2009. The AGN aims to identify and make an inventory of the geological sites of outstanding value in Africa; to promote and increase the awareness among policy makers and the general public in Africa, particularly local communities about the necessity of the protection and the valorization of African geological heritage through the creation of geoparks for a sustainable local development; and to build the capacity of local population in the field of geoheritage through a strong networking and the organization of conferences, seminars, symposia, training courses and workshops.

All researchers in the fields of Geosciences, Geoheritage, Geotourism, conservation, environment and sustainable development, policy makers, economists, geopark and local community administrators and leaders, NGOs, business operators, the Media and individuals with interest in Earth Resources-based development are invited to participate and contribute to make this event a success. This workshop will be a sort of a curtain raiser on the state of Geosciences and Geoheritage in Egypt and Arab World.
